Recreation and Activities

Many activities are available for the visitors of Upper Captiva Island: fishing, shelling, swimming, nature walks, and trips to nearby islands to sight see and picnic. Also, our private club, The Safety Harbor Club, provides dockage in our protected harbor, a pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, observation decks and gazebos. Club members can help you arrange side trips for a day or half day adventure. Fishing guide information is available, personal shoppers can deliver supplies to your home, fax and business resources are available, too. Local marinas rent boats for your personal excursions in our surrounding waters.

Fishing

Tarpon, snook, redfish and grouper are just a few of the favorite catches in our bays, estuaries, and the Gulf of Mexico . Local fishing guides will take you for a full-day or a half-day of fishing pleasure. Our waters contain some of the most popular tarpon fishing in the world. Snook are caught off our beaches and redfish are abundant on our grass flats and in our backwaters. Deep-sea fishing and diving provide off shore experiences for the sport enthusiasts.

OTHER

Beaches, observation decks, docks, and pathways provide our visitors with many opportunities to observe tropical wildlife, flora and fauna. Our shores have some of the best shelling in our hemisphere. Manatees and sea turtles live in our waterways. Our remote location provides for some wonderful opportunities to observe the stars and constellations of the evening sky. Sunshine and tropical weather patterns create an atmosphere for year round outdoor activities and relaxation.

Bicycles and hiking compliment our golf cart mode of transportation; automobiles are not permitted on the island. Many islanders enjoy canoes, kayaks, sailing and swimming. Tennis and beach sports provide visitors with competitive activities. Videos, books and gifts are available for your pleasure and relaxation from our shops and clubhouse.

Nearby is Cabbage Key, known to many as the island which inspired Jimmy Buffet to write his famous "Cheeseburger In Paradise" song. Sanibel and Captiva (separate islands) are also a short boat ride away where golf, shopping, restaurants and wildlife sanctuaries provide additional activities.
